Abortion Rights are Human Rights

Campaign Coat Hanger is protest art re: SCOTUS overturning Roe v. Wade

Key Points

  • The majority of Americans believe that abortion should be legal.
  • Outlawing abortion will not stop abortion. It will stop access to safe abortion and dramatically increase harm to the mother.
  •  One of the founding principles of democracy is majority rule. Polls continue to show the majority supports reproductive freedoms, including abortions. Even the majority of those who don't support abortion for themselves believe it should be legal.
  • Outlawing abortions will disproportionately affect poorer communities while continuing unabated for those with the resources to travel or otherwise access them. Around 45% of all abortions are unsafe, of which 97% take place in developing countries.
  • Access to legal abortion reduces the rates of abortion. "Rates have diverged between countries with fewer restrictions and those with more: Between 1990–94 and 2015–19, the average abortion rate in countries with generally legal abortion (excluding China and India) declined by 43 percent. By contrast, in countries with severe restrictions on abortion, the average abortion rate increased by around 12 percent." (https://www.cfr.org/article/abortion-law-global-comparisons)
  • Last but definitely not least, "Access to safe abortion has been established as a human right by numerous international frameworks, the UN Human Rights Committee, and regional human rights courts, including the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. At the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, 179 governments signed a program of action that included a commitment to prevent unsafe abortion. The WHO first recognized unsafe abortion as a public health problem in 1967, and in 2003 it developed technical and policy guidelines that include a recommendation that states pass abortion laws to protect women’s health. According to the UN Population Fund, addressing the unmet need for family planning would both considerably reduce maternal mortality and reduce abortion by up to 70 percent in the developing world." Take Action

  • VOLUNTEER. Volunteer for your local pro-choice candidates and voting precinct. Both Planned Parenthood and Pro-Choice America have done all the work. https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/issues/abortion https://www.prochoiceamerica.org/

  • TAKE TO THE STREETS. Find the orgs in your community and see if they're planning a protest. If not, invite them to or jump in and inquire about leading one.

  • VOTE. Get out and vote. Get others out to vote. Volunteer at the precincts. Join Vote Forward (https://votefwd.org) and write letters to unregistered and low-propensity voters encouraging them to participate in our democracy.

  • DONATE. We get it, everyone's busy. For those that want to do something but don't have the time to hang coat hangers, or get out the vote, or march in the streets, a powerful way to engage is with your dollar. Find your local and national prochoice candidates. Again, go to both Planned Parenthood and/or Pro-Choice America for more information.  You can find out just about anything you want to know. https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/issues/abortion https://www.prochoiceamerica.org/
